One lonely night spillane5/12/2023 That was actually kind of nice.Īs for the book that I decided to read, it was an old paperback detective novel that I purchased at Half-Price Books a few years ago. The snow outside was so bright that it actually generated enough light that I was able to read by it. Even though I had a flashlight with me, I quickly discovered that I didn’t need it. So, I decided to sit in bed and read a book. It was cold, I was shivering, and I couldn’t sleep. Because the power was down (not due to the rolling blackouts that had paralyzed the rest of the state but instead because some idiot drove into a substation) it was about 40 degrees inside of the house. Tuesday morning, around one a.m., the house was surrounded by six inches of snow. As you may have heard, we’ve had a bit of inclement weather down here in Texas.

Under the never sky5/11/2023 It attaches itself over one eye, acting as both a regular eye, and an eye into the Realm of their choice. These Realms are accessed by way of a 'Smarteye' which is part bionics and part electronics. By creating 'Realms' that span the course of history, the future, and any destination that can be imagined, those who dwell within the Pods manage to stimulate themselves with a rich and diverse environment. In the Pods, the populations use technology to escape their confined environment. As a result, a large portion of the population chose to live in self contained city sized Pods. It is a story in which world is plagued with air that is seething with electrically charged storms charring any place where they meet land. "Under the Never Sky" by Veronica Rossi is a futuristic look at a world in which the population is divided between those who live in Pods, and those who survive under the sky.

Fahrenheit 451 year5/11/2023 Will Montag be the next person to be disappeared?īradbury said he wrote the book at a time of heightened tensions about communist infiltration. Montag’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, arousing the suspicions of Captain Beatty. She’s more concerned about the prospect of losing the house and her beloved “parlour wall” entertainment if Montag gives up his job. His doubts fail to rouse any sympathy in his wife Mildred. Bradbury’s Inspirationīradbury’s main character is Montag, a fireman whose conversations with a teenage neighbour lead him to question his role in destroying books and all the knowledge they contain. These are not described in the novel but I imagine they could be similar to today’s wireless and cordless earphones. Through the “parlour walls” they interact with “friends”, listening into their conversations via “Seashells”. People suspected of keeping a secret supply are made to disappear.ĭeprived of literary stimulus, citizens rely on entertainment via TV screens that stretch across whole walls in their homes. “Firemen” burn any that are discovered along with the houses in which they are hidden. Fahrenheit 451 was written almost seventy years ago but the issues it tackles are still frighteningly relevant today.īradbury imagines a society in which books are outlawed and libraries have ceased to exist.
