Lauren blackwood books5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Teens can be so smart but are often driven by hormones. You kind of get to delve into more of the angst, you know. So I really wanted to give that to modern teens. It's really close to my heart, because when I was a young adult, there were not a lot of books, with characters who looked like me. Everything tries to kill you, which is great!Īnd are the YA and Fantasy genres what you like writing best? And then this huge bull that, of course, tries to kill you. There's a river spirit that, of course, drowns you. But I was actually excited about that because that’s my vibe. All their folklore has to do with like something really bad. I find that in Jamaica they're very morbid. But, I did a little research as well, and there are just a lot of different creatures. I grew up hearing about “duppies” all the time, which are kinda like ghosts. You know, Jamaicans are very superstitious. Well, I used to hear a lot of stories when I was little from my Jamaican grandparents. With that, how did you draw from your past or from your family history? In my last novel, I did Ethiopian folklore. So after I wrote my debut novel, I wanted to write something that was similar in field, but a little more Gothic with some cultural folklore. And it was just about finding the right project. Lauren Blackwood: Oh, well, I always wanted to write a book based on my heritage, Jamaica. ![]() Konstantin Rega: What inspired this wonderful work? ![]()

The glass menagerie play script5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() The current staging of The Glass Menagerie by the African-American Shakespeare Company is a powerfully different take on Tennessee William’s memories, with a cast whose skins are varying shades of brown and whose heritages are a mixture of African-American, Filipino, Latino, Asian, and Indigenous. But in all productions that I have personally seen from London to New York to San Francisco, the common element is that the casts have been all-white. Louis, middle-class setting have time and again been recreated on the stages on and off Broadway, in theatrical centers worldwide, and in thousands of towns where many of high-school-aged actors have cut their acting eye-teeth on the four, now iconic roles created by Williams. ![]() In the decades since, many revivals of the 1930’s, St. In 1944, Tennessee Williams skyrocketed from near obscurity to wide-spread fame with the premiere of The Glass Menagerie, a play touted as a memory play both in the script and in its evident connections to the playwright and his family of an excessively attention-seeking mother, a mentally and physically fragile sister, and a long-absent father. ![]() The African-American Shakespeare Company Mars Holscher ![]()

The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Rothstein incorporated several academic disciplines into his study. ![]() In a bold argument with reparations at its heart, Rothstein argued that the federal government must take responsibility for the economic and social disparity between white and black Americans. Rothstein also detailed the deliberate nature of these racially discriminating policies and how they violate the American Constitution. He asserted that overt racial policies instituted by government agencies imposed de jure segregation upon African American neighborhoods. Rothstein argued that “African Americans were unconstitutionally denied the means and the right to integration in middle-class neighborhoods, and because this denial was state-sponsored, the nation is obligated to remedy it.”1 Rothstein set out to debunk the myth that residential segregation was de facto in nature and, therefore, solely created by private choice and private institutions. His study investigated the impact of residential segregation and the role that state entities played in creating and maintaining the nation’s racial status quo. In The Color of Law, Richard Rothstein uncovered troubling insight into the history of racial discrimination in America. Vampires in a lemon grove5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This gives readers more of a mental image of what Clyde is seeing. Their drop is steep and vertical, a black hail.” Throughout her short story, she used metaphors and similes similar to the way she explained the bats falling like hail. Instead of just saying that many bats descended from the caves, Russel wrote “they flow from cliffs that glow like pale chalk, expelled from caves in the seeming billions. The first example of this that jumped out to me was when Clyde was explaining the descent of bats from their caves. What I enjoyed was that she made what could be simple phrases into something more by wording them in unique and beautiful ways. The way that the author, Karen Russel, phrased her words made the story more readable and more emotional in some ways than any other short story I’ve read. To me, it became more similar to poetry than a short story. Vampires in The Lemon Grove was completely a sensory experience. ![]()
